  • @soniasimone I made the mistake of reading the story. Very glad for the happy ending, but sobbed through a good part of it. 8 hrs ago

Okay, I’ll bite

Interesting exercise on Carole’s D/FW Mom’s board: 5 things you’ve done that nobody else has done. I had to come up with my own list:

* Driven over 25,000 miles around the United States on road trips, by myself and with a friend

* Eaten lunch in the pitch dark in a lava tube in New Mexico

* Blown a tire on a two-wheel drive pick-up on a narrow mountain road overlooking a gorge, next to a sign saying, “All passengers must walk; 14 deaths at this point,” and then proceeded to drive said two-wheel drive pick-up—now with donut tire—up and over 13,000 foot mountain, getting stuck in the snow five times, before driving down the other side and spending the night in a dive motel next to a loud-TV-addicted insomniac and a roomful of drunk Mexicans

* Spent two weeks in a mental institution for observation (while being mistaken for staff three times and getting three free pizzas from Domino’s because they didn’t know where it was; I miss that 30-minutes-or-free deal.)

* Flown in a WWII bomber (B-17 Flying Fortress) and an open cockpit biplane

1. Ran out of gas in the middle of the Mohave desert in a ‘77 triumph spitfire that didn’t have a big enough gas tank to make it the 100 + miles between gas stations–next to an exit with the only gas station for miles (that happened to be at the bottom of the hill–and couldn’t be seen from the HWY)

Ran out of gas AGAIN in the little spitfire in the middle of the several mile long bridge spanning Puget Sound between Seattle and Bellvue with no breakdown lane–in rush hour traffic–in the rain–in a business suit and heels–and no umbrella (no cell phones back then either 1989)!

2. Countless ‘white-knuckle’ rides in my cherolee jeep up countless sides of extremely high, narrow, rocky mountain roads around Vail, CO that I’d probably never remember how even I got to–nor at this stage in my life would even want to!

3. Climbed up and down a 14,500′ mountain (part of which was a sheer ice face) all before noon–then swam 20 somethin’ laps in the hot springs pool near Telluride before having a late lunch at a great Mexican place in Telluride for the Blues Festival.

4. Heard Sean Colvin sing solo at the Blues Festival around 6 p.m. when everyone was leaving to go get dinner–and I couldn’t budge–who was this gal….? She’s GREAT! And bought her tape (no CD’S then–1990)

5. Had my photo taken with Michael Landon–and gave him and his wife several workout towels and locker keys over the course of a week!

Wanna hear more–or should I stop there…: )
