Summer memories

Someone started a thread on the moms’ board that I frequent, and I think it would make an excellent meme, so I’m starting it here, worded my own way:

What are your top five summer favorites?  It can be memories, places to go, things to do, sights, smells, whatever. . . . What says “summer” to you?

My top five:
1) the sound of cicadas in the trees
2) straining my eyes to see where the lightening bugs are in-between flashes
3) the smell of suntan lotion (when I smell it, I’m immediately back in Florida, with my family, on summer vacation)
4) sticky fingers and face from diving into a big slice of watermelon (salted, of course!)
5) driving with the windows down, wind whipping my hair into my eyes and mouth because I forgot my ponytail holder again.

And one that I have to borrow from someone else’s list, because I SO remember this feeling!

Swimming in the pool at night with the underwater light on. I used to love how the pool was so much warmer than the nighttime air. And I loved going back into the freezing cold air-conditioned house after swimming all night. Very good times.

NOW it feels like summer.

I’m going to tag just a few people for this one: Aruni, Naomi, Debbie, and Ree - it’s your turn!

1. Guitars. Everybody plays one but me, and summer brings out the guitars like nothing else.

2. Sunburn. I’m Irish and Russian. I have the whitest skin on earth. Summer ain’t summer without a sunburn.

3. Dirty feet, especially those belonging to the very young.

4. Gin & Tonics — my summer drinks.

5. Fresh air. Finally being able to open my windows as wide as I want after 7 months of snow.

Thanks, Naomi!

1) I only know one person who really plays guitar, and I don’t see him very often, and usually without his guitar, so I’m jealous if you get to hear them lots!
2) I used to get ONE burn per summer, no more, no less; these days I’m not out enough to get burned. : (
3) We know all about dirty feet ’round here. . . .
4) I discovered a couple of years ago that I like gin and tonics, but my summer drink is Bourbon slush! (crushed pineapples, maraschino cherries, water, lemon juice, and bourbon, frozen and then mixed with Sprite/7up/whatever. mmmmmm!)
5) I WISH we could open our windows, but the heat here in Texas is suffocating!!

Wow! Ya’ll have thought of some great ones! First of all, I DREADED summers in TX–sorry Carole! But I did!! So now we’re in Maine…whole different story! (And after THIS winter we deserve a long summer!) SO…

1. Fresh picked strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries still warm from the sun

2. Crystal clear COOL nights with a bazillion stars stretching forever–and the hugest full moons I’ve ever seen!

3. Vegetables fresh from the garden sold in wheel baroows and wagons sitting in farmhouse yards along the back roads

4. The smell of salt air and wild roses in full bloom along the beaches

5. Zillions upon zillions of fireflies darting across open meadows

Oh! And can I do one more…?

6. The roundest, puffiest white clouds skidding so low across the sky you feel like you can just reach out and touch them!

And I could go on for at least 200 more…!

Thanks, Deb — those are great!!!

I think I would probably LOVE summer in Maine, but I’d have to high-tail it out of there LONG before the snows hit!!!
